Sinn Féin comment on appointment of new Garda Commissioner - Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Responding to the appointment of Drew Harris as the new Garda Commissioner today, Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD said;
“Sinn Féin will work constructively with the new Commissioner, Drew Harris, and we will hold him to account, as we have held previous Commissioners.
“The process undertaken by the Policing Authority is now complete, and there is now again a Garda Commissioner in place.
“Our preference, was that the process of the Commission of the Future of Policing would have been completed before making this appointment, notwithstanding that, it is good that the position is now filled.
“The experience in the North has shown the importance of strong accountability mechanisms and of reform.
“There is a need for much stronger accountability mechanisms in the South, which are fit for purpose.
“We look forward to hearing from him how he intends to ensure that he and An Garda Síochána are fully accountable, and how it can be reoriented back towards Policing with the Community, and we look forward to meeting him in relation to that.
“We also hope that the Commission on the Future of Policing will bring forward radical proposals for reform, and that the new Garda Commissioner will work to deliver an accountable and transparent policing service.
“Sinn Féin has high standards for policing, and we will continue as we have done to date, to hold An Garda Síochána to account, and to pursue comprehensive reform of policing."
