Ní Chuilín urges support for housing demo

27 June, 2018 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson Carál Ní Chuilín is urging support for a major demonstration in Belfast on Friday demanding the construction of new social and affordable homes.

The North Belfast MLA said it was important to show support for the ‘Build Homes Now’ demonstration which will take place at the Housing Executive Headquarters and Belfast City Hall.

“We are in the midst of a housing crisis right across Ireland,” she said. “Families are calling home, a hotel or hostel, this is degrading and unacceptable.

“Here in the North, there are over 20,000 people in housing stress across the North and here in Belfast, there are 11,276 families on the housing waiting list, with plans to build only 2,300 homes and this is compounded by some of the discriminatory practices that still exist here.

“This situation is intolerable. These families are being failed by the Housing Executive and the Department for Communities.

“We are appealing to the Housing Executive, to the Department for Communities and to local Government to collectively work to tackle this growing housing crisis.

“They must ensure that every opportunity to develop homes is grasped. More social and affordable homes are desperately needed. They must also ensure that we never again face another situation like that of Hillview whereby unionists vetoed homes for Catholics and the Housing Executive facilitated this by wrongly claiming that community agreement was needed.

“The current situation is unacceptable ad unsustainable so I would urge people to come along to Friday’s demonstration to demand a major step change in housing policy in the North.”

Demonstrators will meet at Belfast City Hall at 9am before delivering letters of protest at the offices of Belfast City Council, the Housing Executive and the Department for Communities.
