Tories cannot be allowed to back-peddle on commitments with EU - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the British government cannot be allowed to back-peddle on the commitments it has already entered into with the EU.
Martina Anderson said:
"It is clear that at the ongoing EU summit that the EU is telling the British government that insufficient progress has been made in relation to what has already been agreed.
"The EU has reminded the Tories of the commitments they made in December and March when they recognised the specific and unique circumstances of the north needs to be recognised in the backstop and that it must be upheld, irrespective of the nature of the future relationship.
"Instead the British government has been trying to renege on the commitments it has made, as it always does.
"The Irish government must now resist any attempts at back-peddling from what has already been agreed and should in fact seek to build on what has been agreed in order to protect our rights.
"While the EU is preparing for a no-deal Brexit, we in the north shouldn't be prepared to watch our rights being undermined and denied."
