Mary Lou McDonald TD welcomes British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference announcement
Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald has welcomed tonight's announcement that the Irish and British governments will hold an Intergovernmental conference at the end of July.
Speaking from Co. Leitrim, Ms McDonald TD said;
"Sinn Féin has been calling for an Intergovernmental Conference to take place for months now in order to pave a way for the restoration of power sharing in the North.
"I very much welcome the announcement that the Conference will be held next month.
"We have been clear that the focus of the Intergovernmental Conference must produce a plan to bring forward the legislation on Marriage Equality, the Irish Language and Legacy Inquest and provide resources to secure these rights
"It must also set out a mechanism for the implementation of the existing agreements.
"I would urge the British government to approach the Conference with common sense and put the imperative of restoring the Executive ahead of its dependency on the DUP.
"For its part, the DUP must embrace the spirit of power-sharing and full equality.
"This is how we will move to break the political deadlock.
"Powersharing remains the best way forward and Sinn Féin is committed to the restoration of the institutions based on equality, respect and good governance for all.”
