Sinn Féin launch Fair play for Ulster Gaels campaign

29 June, 2018 - by Sinéad Ennis

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Culture, Art and Sport Sinéad Ennis MLA has urged the GAA Ulster Council to tackle the issue of hugely inflated Ulster Championship ticket prices and the lack of live TV coverage available in the North.

Speaking after launching a Twitter Poll Campaign, #FairPlayForUlsterGaels, the South Down MLA said:

“Today, I am launching the #FairPlayForUlsterGaels Twitter poll to lobby the GAA Ulster Council to secure a fair deal for GAA Fans in the north.

“Recently we have seen significant backlash against the BBC’s decision to slash the number of live GAA Championship games being shown on their station.

“Over a quarter of a million people attend GAA matches in the north over the season with countless more wanting to watch or listen to the GAA coverage whether on the TV, radio or online.

“The ongoing block on important sporting events broadcast on RTÉ is also causing major frustration for sports fans and members of the GAA.

“A recent upsurge in ticket prices for matches has out-priced families who wish to enjoy the sport, but also compounded the inequality that exists for GAA fans in the north.

“The GAA Ulster Council must defend our interests by introducing affordable ticket prices for Ulster Championship games and being our voice in the room to bring an end to the digital partition of Ireland and ensuring that citizens in the north are not collateral damage for a viewing rights power-grab.”
