New jobs must be backed by sustained investment

8 September, 2005

Sinn Féin Newry Armagh MP Conor Murphy welcoming the announcement that HCL will create 600 new jobs in Belfast and Armagh City has said that it must be backed up by sustained investment in infrastructure West of the Bann to ensure that more inward investment can be attracted and that jobs can be retained in the long-term.

Mr Murphy said:

"Sinn Féin will be working to ensure that as many of these planned jobs as possible come to Armagh.

"It is also important that announcement‚s such as this are backed up by sustained investment in infrastructure West of the Bann to ensure that more inward investment can be attracted and that jobs can be retained in the long-term.

"We also need to see government agencies such as Invest NI recognise that they have a greater responsibility to support economic development in border areas and that they must move away from the bias towards giving assistance to companies located in work rich areas like South Belfast and the East Coast."
