Sinn Féin tell Irish Government that rights of nationalist must be protected
Sinn Féin MLA for North Belfast Gerry Kelly will lead a party delegation to meet with the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern in Belfast today. Mr Kelly will be joined by Philip McGuigan MLA for North Antrim and North Belfast Councillor Margaret McClenaghan.
Speaking before the meeting Mr Kelly said:
"Today's meeting with the Irish Government is part of a much wider initiative to draw attention to the campaign of orchestrated loyalist violence against vulnerable nationalist communities over the past number of months. The Minister will hear at first hand about a campaign of terror which has seen people and property come under attack from gunfire, pipe bombs, paint-bombs, bricks and bottles.
"Understandably, many nationalists feel vulnerable and angry at the lack of political leadership within unionism, the inaction of the PSNI and relative silence from both governments on the issue.
"The Irish government must defend the rights of nationalists. They must stop ignoring loyalist violence and the ambivalence of the PSNI towards it. They must stand up for the rights of nationalist communities. This will be our message to Dermot Ahern today." ENDS
