Qatar beef market should mean better prices for primary producers - Martin Kenny TD

2 July, 2018 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on agriculture, food and marine Martin Kenny TD has said that farmers need to see the benefits of access to new markets for Irish produce.

Deputy Kenny said:

“I welcome the news of that the market in Qatar has opened for Irish meat, but it is imperative that Irish farmers and producers get some benefit from these increased markets. We have recently seen the opening up of markets for Irish beef in China which should be good news for Irish farmers.

“The question has to be asked why Irish meat processors are pulling the price being paid for beef to Irish farmers when export markets for Irish beef are increasing.

“It’s all very well for the Minister to make big announcements but if the primary producers, Irish farmers, are not going to receive any benefit from these new markets then all he is doing is increasing profits for meat processors who will continue to exploit the farmers.

“The Minister must ensure that farmers are receiving a fair price for their produce and he has a responsibility to protect Irish farmers from exploitation by meat processing plants.”
