‘We must create a compassionate debate in the North’ – O’Neill
There must be a compassionate debate mirroring the Repeal the 8th campaign on the need for legislative abortion reform in the North, Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Michelle O’Neill has said.
The party’s Vice President was commenting after meeting with a range of bodies today, including Alliance for Choice, the Royal College of Nurses, the Family Planning Association and the Royal College of GPs.
“What is abundantly clear from these discussions is the need for reform in the North,” she commented.
“That needs to begin with ending the criminalisation of women by repeal Sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Persons Act.
“The result in the Repeal the 8th referendum delivered positive change and will help to create a society which is more compassionate and caring and which, at its core, trusts women.
“We now need to create the same compassionate debate in the North because women are being failed here, just as they were in the South.
“I believe there is an overwhelming desire, within the wider public and within the medical professional to see this issue addressed in a compassionate and caring manner to ensure that women’s access to healthcare is harmonised across the island.”
