Mary Lou McDonald TD challenges Tánaiste on agonising wait for children with Scoliosis

3 July, 2018 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has challenged Tánaiste Simon Coveney regarding the scandal of eighty eight children suffering from scoliosis who are now waiting more than the promised four months for surgery and she questioned him when those children will have their operations.

Speaking at Leaders Questions today, Teachta McDonald said;

“Some of these children are waiting more than three years. These children are not able to live a full life. They live in agony.

"Their parents are frustrated and exhausted from battling the system. They are worn-out fighting for their children to access vital medical treatment - a life changing surgery. This is a battle they should not have to fight.

“We all watched on in horror and grief when RTÉ Investigates broadcast its ‘Living on the List’ programme. It provided a harrowing insight into the daily struggles faced by these children and their families.

"In the aftermath of the programme, the Minister for Health offered apologies and made promises.

“Those promises have now been broken eighty eight times. I cannot imagine what it must be like for a child to endure this suffering.”

Ms McDonald accused Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil of being more interested in the choreography of their phoney war than in addressing the issues that matter.

“It is hard to imagine what it must like for the families of these children to watch on as the phoney war being waged between Leo Varadkar and Micheál Martin plays out.

“The meaningless egotistical jousting between the Taoiseach and Micheál Martin is not new. Fianna Fáil seeks to mask their support for a Fine Gael led government, for Fine Gael policies and for Fine Gael Budgets by picking sham fights.

"People do not want self-indulgent fisticuffs over who is the biggest boy in the school yard. People want solutions.
“So the Taoiseach and Teachta Martin need to cop-on and focus attention on those eighty-eight children who are desperately in need of Scoliosis surgery.”
