Social work must tackle poverty - Gildernew

3 July, 2018 - by Colm Gildernew

Sinn Féin Carers spokesperson Colm Gildernew MLA has said tackling poverty must be to the fore of social work as a profession.

The Fermanagh & South Tyrone MLA was commenting after attending the launch of the Anti-Poverty Practice Framework for Social Work.

Colm Gildernew said:

“I welcome today’s launch of the Anti-Poverty Practice Framework for Social Work which aims to create awareness within social workers to tackle poverty within our communities.

“Poverty is truly the ‘elephant in the room’ for many situations that social workers find themselves in. Over 24% of single people without children live in poverty and 40% of lone parents live in poverty, this is clearly an issue that we cannot ignore.

“I had an opportunity to talk to social workers from across the north, who recognise the adverse effects that poverty has on society and social workers as a profession can play a role in tackling poverty.

“Policy makers need to properly examine the impact of social conditions and their consequences for personal and family life and develop a strategy which brings an end to inequality in our society.

“We all need to truly reflect how we address inequalities in our everyday lives.”
