Sammon subcontractors 'on the brink' - Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said the testimony of the subcontractors affected by the Sammon liquidation shows that they “are on the brink” economically and even in terms of their health.
He has reiterated his call for the newly selected main contractor to engage the subcontractors.
Deputy Doherty said:
“The presentation today from the subcontractors shows a group of hard-working SMEs, the backbone of our economy, on the brink economically and health wise because of the Sammon collapse.
"They have done nothing wrong but face possible ruin because of the collapse of Sammon which itself was caused by the collapse of Carillion.
"The moral and economic solution is the one and the same - for the new contractor, Woodvale, to engage these subcontractors.
"The alternative is to have new school buildings and pitches in use by the State in September while the builders who built them face bankruptcy or liquidation.
"The technical issues around certification raised by the subcontractors must be looked into fully by the NDFA.
"This issue and the threat of legal action only reinforces the fact that the solution to this issue is for the NDFA to insist that the new contractor re-engages the subcontractors to complete their work and have it certified by them as is required under existing building regulations.“
