Lack of accountability over bonfires must end - Archibald

11 July, 2018 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said has there is a need for greater accountability over bonfires.

The East Derry MLA said, "Concerns have been raised with myself and our other reps about bonfires in Limavady in terms of proximity to houses and also tyres on bonfires. These concerns come following an increased marking of territory with paramilitary and other flags.

"Cllr Brenda Chivers and I have been engaging with the statutory agencies and PSNI over the bonfires, with the Housing Executive having to erect cladding between one bonfire and houses to protect them.

"However the agencies have cited staff safety as a reason not to take further action to remove tyres or to intervene over safety.

"Earlier this year a draft Bonfire Framework was prepared for Causeway Coast & Glens Council with input from these agencies, however this framework did not receive support from council members and as a result the agencies are working in a vacuum.

"It is time this lack of accountability over bonfires ended, all elected representatives must take responsibility to ensure both safety and environmental concerns are addressed.

"I would call on Unionist elected and community representatives to use their influence in a positive way in relation to bonfires and paramilitary flags, to reduce tensions and promote good relations across the area."
