Social use for Girdwood and Crumlin must be prioritised

12 September, 2005

Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Kathy Stanton commenting on the announcements about the future of the Crumlin Road Gaol and Girdwood barracks has said that it is essential that the sites directly benefit the local community.

Ms Stanton said:

"In developing inner city Brownfield sites there is far too much emphasis being placed on economic use and not enough on social use.

"In north Belfast 85% of those on the Housing Executive waiting is are nationalist. It is vital that any future development plans for either of these two sites addresses the serious housing problem.

"North Belfast also needs a leisure facility that is safely accessible for nationalists.

"A priority must also be to return vested land back to its rightful owners so, for example, ST Malachi's can redevelop the GAA pitches

"This is an opportunity to address the very serious social issues affecting north Belfast, particularly in terms of housing, leisure facilities, but also to address the wider issue of poverty." ENDS
