School subcontractors must be paid for their work - Pearse Doherty TD

26 July, 2018 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said work done by Sammon subcontractors on schools around the country must be certified by the subcontractors and they must be paid for their work.

Teachta Doherty was speaking today after the Department of Public Expenditure and the National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) appeared before the Oireachtas Finance Committee.

The Donegal TD said:

“The subcontractors who built and supplied equipment for these schools face financial ruin as a result of the collapse of Sammon.

“They have also told us of the adverse effect this has taken on their health and mental health.

“It is both legally and morally wrong for the new contractor to have an independent assessor certify the work of these subcontractors, essentially ensuring that they will never be paid for their work.

“The work done by the subcontractors must be certified by those subcontractors.  That is the legal obligation but it is not being upheld in this instance.

“The new contractor must engage with those who built and supplied the equipment for these schools.

“These SME’s, the backbone of economy, must not be the fall guys for the collapse of Sammon which itself was caused by the collapse of Carillion.”
