Leo Varadkar failure to honour commitments to victims of Cervical Smear Scandal has compounded damage and hurt - Mary Lou McDonald TD
Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has today called the treatment of Ruth Morrissey and the other victims as a "further scandal, compounding damage and hurt".
Deputy McDonald TD said;
"The cervical smear scandal only came to light because of the courage and tenacity of Vicky Phelan.
"The government promised that her battle through the courts would be the last; that no other victim would face legal obstacles and obstruction.
"The government has reneged on this commitment. They are acting in bad faith. This week Ruth Morrissey and her family have become the latest victims to face state hostility.
“The government must now do the right thing by these women and their families. Taoiseach Varadkar must now honour his commitments to the victims of the cervical smear scandal.”
Ms McDonald continued;
"It is absolutely and fundamentally wrong that terminally ill women, women who do not have long left with their loved ones, are spending precious time inside court rooms
"The government should be supporting these women; not dragging them through the courts."
