Bairbre de Brún meets with Jesuit Refugee Service regarding treatment of detained immigrants

13 September, 2005

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún met with representatives of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Brussels today to discuss the detention and treatment of third country nationals across Europe. Ms de Brún will travel to Clover Hill Prison, West Dublin on Friday as part of a delegation of Irish MEPs to ascertain the conditions of detainees currently held in Irish prisons.

Today's meeting comes in advance of an EU Civil Liberties Committee delegation of MEPs to the island of Lampedusa, Italy to view a centre there where migrants are detained.

Ms de Brún travelled to Lampedusa in June as part of a cross-country delegation of MEPs and saw for herself the conditions in which detainees were held.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) had criticised the centre and said that they had concerns regarding the procedures applied to immigrants and the physical conditions in which they were held. ENDS
