‘Granny Grant’ shows that government have no understanding of childcare problems – Adams

8 August, 2018 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin TD for Louth Gerry Adams is calling on the government to get real about the problems with childcare system, instead of bringing forward proposals like the ‘Granny Grant’.

Teachta Adams said:

“The Independent Alliance recently announced its ‘Granny Grant’ budget proposal. According to Minister Shane Ross, this would cost €70million. Upon closer inspection, this proposal has not even been properly costed. It is, at best, only tinkering around the edges of a serious problem.

“Let us be clear, decades of government under-investment in childcare is a primary factor in the problems families now face.

“Childcare costs are absolutely sky-high at the moment. Many parents are paying the equivalent of a second mortgage in crèche fees.

“This proposal will do nothing to bring these costs down. It further shows that government have no understanding of the real problems faced by families.”
