Maskey welcomes absence of bonfires in Belfast
Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has welcomed the fact that, for the first time in 40 years, no bonfires were lit on the anniversary of internment in Belfast.
The West Belfast MP commented,
“Statutory organisations, community representatives and political representatives have worked tirelessly over many years to bring an end to unwanted bonfires.
“Last night saw that work come to fruition. Not one bonfire was lit across Belfast.
“I want to commend all those involved with this work over the years.
“There were events across the city and one massive event in Falls Park organised by Féile an Phobail which thousands of young people attended. This contributed enormously to ensuring an enjoyable and was an enjoyable and trouble-free night.
“I believe this is a model for other areas and I am confident all those involved will continue this positive work to ensure bonfires become a thing of the past.”
