Crowe calls for immediate and substantial increase in fuel allowance

15 September, 2005

Commenting on the dramatic increase in the cost of fuel Sinn Féin spokesperson on Social and Family Affairs Seán Crowe TD called for an immediate and substantial increase in the fuel allowance.

Speaking today he said, "The fuel allowance of 9 Euros a week or 12.30 a week if you live in a smokeless fuel zone is a paltry and inadequate amount to begin with. When you combine this fact with the dramatic rise in fuel costs over recent times the case for a substantial increase is clear.

"The onset of winter and ever increasing fuel costs will inflict hardship on the less well off in society. It is within the Minister‚s power to alleviate this suffering and his actions in this matter will be a yardstick against which the attitude of himself and his Government to the less well off in society can be measured. Indeed it will be a measure of their basic humanity. I am calling for an immediate and substantial increase in the fuel allowance. Minister Brennan must take immediate action on this matter." ENDS
