Milne sets out Sinn Féin position on gold mining

23 August, 2018 - by Ian Milne

Speaking after a community meeting on the possibility of gold mining in the Tirgan/Desertmartin area of South Derry, Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Ian Milne said:

“Sinn Féin’s position on gold mining and processing is very clear and was set out in motion 68 at the party’s Ard Fheis in 2017.

“Sinn Féin is opposed to the use of cyanide in mining due to its environmental and health implications.

"Sinn Féin recognises the environmental damage caused by precious metals mining and the extraction of Ireland's non-renewable natural resources with little or no benefit to local communities.

“Former Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard MP made it clear that in regard to gold mining in Tyrone he was of the view that any planning application should be subject to an independent public inquiry before any final decision was taken.

“That remains our position, and in the event of a public inquiry we will continue to oppose the use of cyanide in the mining process."
