Sinn Féin raise Muckamore Abbey Hospital concerns with Belfast Trust

24 August, 2018 - by Colm Gildernew

Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Health and Wellbeing Colm Gildernew has met with the Belfast Trust to discuss concerns about the treatment of vulnerable adults in Muckamore Abbey Hospital.

Speaking after the meeting the Fermanagh-South Tyrone MLA said:

"I met with senior officials in the Belfast Trust to raise concerns about adult safeguarding in Muckamore, to receive an update on the steps being taken by the Trust to ensure safe levels of care are being provided to vulnerable adults, and to ensure that previous breaches of care are being investigated.

"I emphasised the importance of a thorough and robust investigation into all complaints of mistreatment of vulnerable patients.

"Additionally I encouraged the Trust to engage closely and communicate regularly with patients and families.

"Transparency is central to reassuring patients and families that lessons are being learned by the Trust to prevent a repeat of failures in care at Muckamore.

"The Trust said that they are continuing with their investigations into Muckamore and work has begun on further recruitment to address staff shortages.

"I will continue to engage with the Belfast Trust and others to ensure vulnerable patients receive the level of care they are entitled to and deserve."
