Minister Murphy ‘out of touch and out of time’ – Ó Broin
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has rubbished claims made by Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy this morning on Today with Miriam that his housing policies are working. Minister Murphy’s defence of his record on housing was astounding and it shows how this Minister is “out of touch” and “out of time”.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“The Minister for Housing either truly believes his policies are working or he is so out of touch he cannot grasp the reality of the lived experience for many tenants, young families, pensioners, and students as they struggle to find somewhere to live and hold on to it.
“I don’t know how the Minister can go on national radio and defend his record as Minister for the past year when all the evidence points that his policies are failing.
“There are children sleeping in Garda stations, students sleeping in cars and commuting for hours, overcrowded housing with many vulnerable workers sleeping in the same beds in shifts.
“The Minister keeps stating that supply is the issue. It is not.
“When Fianna Fáil presided over the construction of a record number of new homes during the boom, some 93,000, there was an affordability crisis.
“Supply alone will not deliver homes for the vast majority of people. The market cannot provide for the needs of a huge cohort of people who, for example, earn too much to eligible for social housing but not enough to save for a deposit while paying astronomical rents.
“The government must prioritise the introduction of a truly affordable housing scheme. We need public housing built on public land.
“Likewise, we need student accommodation to be affordable. What is the point in delivering 2,000 new student beds, if ordinary students and their parents cannot afford the cost which in some cases is €1,000 per month.
“Minister Murphy is out of time and out of ideas.”
