Government must lead by example on Mother and Baby Homes – Mary Lou McDonald TD
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has called on the government to lead by example on the mother and baby homes and illegal adoption scandals.
Speaking today the Sinn Féin leader said:
“Minister Zappone's memo to Pope Francis is welcome. These words now must be matched with action on the part of the church and state.
"Neither the state or the church should be permitted to shirk their responsibilities to survivors and their families.
"The church and its hierarchy must face up to the abuses committed over many decades and so too must the state.
"It is the role of the state to vindicate and protect the rights of citizens. The government must lead by example.
"The burial sites at the mother and baby homes must be secured, the remains exhumed and every effort made to reunite the remains of those babies and children with their families.
"This is in the gift of the government and is the right thing to do.
"The government must also release all files in relation to Magdalene Laundries and illegal adoptions.
"They should outline the terms of the scoping exercise into the illegal adoption scandal and ensure a testimony is heard in full from survivors.
"We now need full cooperation from both church and state in order to ensure justice is done.
"Survivors need more than words, they need action and it is the government that must lead by example.”
