No place for discrimination in education - Fearon

29 August, 2018 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin Equality spokesperson Megan Fearon has said that there can be absolutely no place for discrimination against disabled people.

Speaking following news that the Department of the Economy and the South Eastern Regional college granted £2,000 to Special Olympics Gold medallist Adam Smyth after they failed to make adjustments for his catering course due to his learning disability, the Newry Armagh MLA said,

“Adam Smyth was told that because he took an extra year to complete his Level One in catering due to his learning disability, he couldn’t obtain funding for Level Two.

“It is totally unacceptable in today’s society that some people with learning difficulties have to rely on family financial support to complete their courses should they take an extra year.

“Exceptions should and must be made to ensure that everyone gets a fair and equal chance to fulfil their potential when trying to further their education and training.”
