Child and family homelessness increases in July - Eoin Ó Broin TD
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has commented on the release of the Department of Housing’s July Homeless figures.
The figures show that homeless crisis is deepening with an additional 24 families and 43 children in emergency accommodation in July.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“The July 2018 figures released today show that the number of homeless individuals now stands at 9,891. This represents an annual increase of 21%.
“In July 2018 there were 24 additional homeless families in Department of Housing funded emergency accommodation. The number of families accessing emergency accommodations services in July was 1,778.
"This is 349 more families than same month last year. This is an increase of 24%.
“The number of homeless children has increased again despite a tiny dip last month. In July 2018 there were 3867 children sleeping in emergency accommodation an increase of 43 on June 2018.
"This represents an annual increase of 30%.
“Minister Murphy and his government are failing to tackle the crisis, while Fianna Fáil sits on its hands.
“The government has decided to plough ahead with its failing policies instead of holding its hands up and admitting they are on the wrong track.”
