Anderson to attend Portuguese Left Bloc conference
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson will attend the annual conference of the Portuguese Left Bloc party in Leiria this weekend.
Speaking before attending the event, Martina Anderson said:
"This coming year will see many changes across Europe. Politics in Ireland, Britain and Europe has been dominated by Brexit since the British referendum in 2016. Comrades, Brexit was born from rise of the far right in Britain.
"Brexit is the biggest disaster to have happened to the island of Ireland since partition. Across Ireland, some people are sleep walking into it.
"The British are engaged with total farce, and shows their complete distain for the Good Friday Agreement and all those in the north who will suffer the consequences of their Brexit agenda.
"The DUP never endorsed the Good Friday Agreement. They have always worked to ensure that they get their share of power, and have no concern with power-sharing. Make no mistake the DUP are a far right party.
"I am in no doubt that xenophobia, isolationism and nostalgia for the colonial days of yesteryear were the driving force behind the British referendum to leave the European Union.
"Now is the tome that the left need to re-claim nationalism. The left need to take action, take control and pull Europe into the 21st century. Austerity is not the answer; this helps no one but the rich. Xenophobia is not the answer. We do not want history to repeat itself."
