‘Dublin and EU must defend Northern citizens’ – Ó Muilleoir
The Dublin Government and the EU27 must stand firm in the face of British attempts to undermine the rights of Irish citizens in the Brexit negotiations, Sinn Fein MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has said.
Speaking from a party planning event in County Cavan, the Sinn Féin Brexit spokesperson warned that London would try to force through a Brexit deal that would be ‘disastrous’ for Ireland.
“The British Government are pushing this negotiation through to November and we have a long experience of these people in terms of negotiation,” he commented. “They will run this to the wire and they will try and bounce the EU and the Irish government into a deal which is in the interests of Britain and certainly not in the interests of the people who live on this island.
“That will have a potentially disastrous impact on the people who live on this island.
“However, the Taoiseach gave reassuring statements to Irish citizens living in the northern side of the border who voted to remain within the EU. He gave us very strong assurances in relation to the Irish government stance in terms of our rights and we want to see him hold to those commitments.
“We need to see Michel Barnier and the Irish Government hold firm to commitments that were given to Irish citizens and to ensure that the rights of people right across this island are protected.”
