‘Collins comments have no basis in reality’ - Dillon
Sinn Féin Legacy spokesperson Linda Dillon MLA has said that comments from former British Army Colonel Tim Collins on the legacy of the conflict, ‘bear no relation to the actual reality’.
The Mid-Ulster MLA was commenting after the former Iraq War Colonel told the BBC that conflict-related investigations are disproportionately impacting on state actors and that the issue had been manipulated by Sinn Féin.
Linda Dillon commented: “Once again, we hear the spurious claim being made that the legacy process is skewed against former British soldiers. We have heard this claim from right across the British establishment, from Theresa May down, but it simply bears no relation to the actual reality.
“They fly in the face of the facts published by the Director of the Public Prosecution Service and by the PSNI. They also cause renewed hurt and great offence to the families of the State’s victims.
“British soldiers killed Irish citizens with impunity during the conflict and they now want immunity as well.
“However, any attempt to do so is entirely unacceptable and I would again urge the public to take part in the current consultation process on establishing the Legacy bodies from the Stormont House Agreement.
“I would appeal to everyone to engage with the consultation. It will be an opportunity to try to shape the legacy mechanisms and to do so based on your life experiences.
“Every story must be told right across the board.”
