Investment in research is vital to supporting economic growth - Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said postgraduate research is vital in supporting innovation and has the potential to transform society economically and culturally.

Speaking after the Celebration of Postgraduate Research Excellence at Queen’s University and Ulster University today in the Ulster Museum, the Party’s Further and Higher Education Spokesperson said:“The postgraduate research taking place in our universities is cutting edge with both local and international impact.“Research plays a vital role in supporting innovation and has the potential to transform society economically and culturally.“Postgraduate training as well as developing research, prepares students for employment in a wide range of sectors with more than 50 percent going on to employment in industry and the third sector.“The ‘3 minute thesis’ presentations today from a range of students showcased the high quality research being undertaken at both Queens University and Ulster University across a range of study areas."Investment in research is vital to supporting economic growth.“Many research projects in our universities are funded through EU funding streams and Brexit has brought a great deal of uncertainty to researchers. “It is critically important that there is is continued access to EU funding streams and collaboration opportunities; the best way to ensure this is to secure designated special status for the north within the EU.”
