‘Say no to apartheid in sport’ - Sheehan

7 September, 2018 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has urged people to support a demonstration against the IFA’s decision to host an International friendly with the Israeli soccer team in Belfast.

The demonstration will take place on Saturday 8 September at 12 noon at Belfast’s International Wall.

The West Belfast MLA said:

“The people of Belfast have a proud history of standing in solidarity with the people of Palestine against the brutal and oppressive Israeli regime.

“On Tuesday, the IFA will welcome the Israeli soccer team to Belfast for an international friendly, this comes on the back of Israeli military murdering hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza.

“Sinn Féin support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign and have outlined our objections to the IFA as we believe hosting this friendly is the wrong thing to do.

“Disgraceful restrictions placed on Palestinians prohibits the Palestinian national team from flourishing internationally and restricts young Palestinians from developing their soccer skills.

“The Israeli government must hear our voices in opposition to their mass killings, human rights violations and flagrant violations of international law.

“I am urging people to reject apartheid in sport and to place pressure on the IFA to cancel this match by joining a rally at Belfast’s International Wall at 12 noon on Saturday 8 September.”
