Sinn Féin welcomes establishment of Expert Group on Traveller Accommodation – Ó Broin
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has today welcomed the establishment of an Expert Group on Traveller Accommodation by Minister of State Damien English. Teachta Ó Broin said “both Damien English and the Expert Group will have our full cooperation to ensure that changes are made to the funding and implementation of Traveller accommodation”.
The Dublin Mid-West TD said:
“Today, Minister of State Damien English announced the establishment of an Expert Group on Traveller Accommodation. The Group has been asked to propose recommendations to Government on how to tackle the failure of the Traveller Accommodation Programmes. The Group will build on the important Department of Housing and Housing Agency Report on the traveller accommodation programmes published earlier this year.
“This Group has been given an important job. It must do its work and make its recommendations as quickly as possible. We know from the report published earlier this year where the problems are in terms of planning, land availability and funding drawdown.
“This means reviewing the operation of Part 8 planning rules, Section 138 land disposals, and introduce mechanisms to ensure Councils spend the money they are actually allocated.
“Sinn Féin will cooperate fully and enthusiastically with Minister English’s and the Expert Group in their work. There will also be active cooperation from the Oireachtas Housing Committee.
“We need Minister English and the Expert Group to be bold and to bring forward solutions that once and for all give Travellers access to safe, secure, and culturally appropriate accommodation. If the Expert Group brings forward recommendations that move us in this direction, they will have Sinn Féin’s active support.”
