Doolan - Dublin must comply with 'Car Free Day'
Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on Environment & Dublin South East Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, today called on Dublin City Council, "to get into line with other European cities and make this Thursday 'Car Free Day' for the people of Dublin."
Speaking with environmental groups in Dublin today, Cllr. Doolan said:
"This is Energy Awareness Week, if we are to make it relevant we must take action this Thursday. As it stands Dublin will be the only capital in Europe which will have cars on it's streets this Thursday.
This week cities right across Europe are making every effort to ensure that Car Free Day is a success. But here in the capital nothing will be done. I was shocked to be told today that people will be simply encouraged not to use their car. This is ridiculous, real efforts must be made to make Dublin a car free zone. It is particularly pertinent at time when there is global concern at the cost of oil and the effect it's consumption is having on our environment.''
In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, called on City Council management, "to urgently address the issue and ensure that every effort is made to support Car Free Day this Thursday ." ENDS
