Micheál Martin spinning mistruths and non-solutions – Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin TD and Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty has dismissed Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin’s assertions in a Morning Ireland appearance today as “rambling mistruths and non-solutions to very real problems”.
The Donegal TD said:
“It seems Teachta Martin’s Fianna Fáil has gone back to the well and come up with the same tired old notions – tax breaks for landlords as a means of solving the housing crisis; a tried and true Fianna Fáil non-solution if ever there was one.
"Fianna Fáil destroyed our economy once before and show no signs that they have learned their lesson. Such policies would only plunge us into another boom-bust culture.
“Micheál Martin then fluffed his way through the question of whether or not Fianna Fáil would swear an oath of allegiance to the British Queen and take seats in the Westminster Parliament having just yesterday confirmed that they would.
"He should now outline whether or not Fianna Fáil, under his leadership, would consider entering into a supply and confidence deal with the Tories in London just as they have with their sister party Fine Gael in Dublin.
“Once again, Michéal Martin’s shameful and inaccurate comments on RHI have shown how totally out of touch he is with politics in the North of Ireland.
“The reality is that Martin McGuinness moved decisively and urgently to have RHI quickly shut down immediately when he was made aware by the Head of the Civil Service of the damage and flawed nature of the scheme.
“In contrast to this decisive action to close the scheme urgently, the SDLP, Mícheál Martin’s potential partners, voted in the Assembly to keep this deeply flawed scheme open. Has Teachta Martin raised this issue in his on-going negotiations with the SDLP?
”It is time for Mícheál Martin to spell out where his party stands on the issues of the denial of rights by the DUP including marriage rights, language rights, women’s rights and the right of a victim to a coroner’s inquest.
"It would also be interesting to hear his views on corruption and integrity in government given the disgraceful record of Fianna Fáil in office.
“Sinn Féin will continue to work to end the denial of these rights so that we can have political institutions in the North based on rights, equality and integrity.
“Finally, Teachta Martin extolled the virtues of President Michael D Higgins, saying that he stood behind the President in his re-election bid.
"This is despite the fact that Fianna Fáil Councillors across the state have lined up to endorse senior Fianna Fáil fundraiser Seán Gallagher’s nomination.
“Judging by this morning’s interview, it is clear that Fianna Fáil, under Micheál Martin, offer nothing but rambling mistruths, more dishonesty and non-solutions to very real problems.”
