Fuel poverty must be addressed
Speaking in support of the St Vincent De Paul's call for an increase in the fuel allowance Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Social and Family Affairs Seán Crowe T.D. again called on Minister Brennan to Significantly up the allowance.
"Since I highlighted this issue last week at least two respected groups that work with people who are affected by fuel poverty have also called on the Minister to act. Both Crosscare and the St Vincent de Paul have called for action on the fuel allowance.
"Events such as Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf war have pushed fuel costs through the roof. Gas prices are to go up by 25% and indeed all other forms of fuel are increasing dramatically in cost. I reiterate my call for an increase in the fuel allowance to alleviate the financial stresses now being placed on low-income families. The Government must acknowledge the fact that fuel costs are rapidly rising. Ireland, one of the worlds richest countries, cannot suffer the shame this winter of families, including young children and the elderly, suffering the kind of Dickensian hardship that belongs firmly in the past."
