Kildare/Wicklow ETB Report shows Need for Sanctions on Procurement – Cullinane
Sinn Féin TD and member of the Public Accounts Committee David Cullinane said today that there is urgent need for proper sanctions for non-compliance regarding procurement in order to tackle the issues endemic with the national procurement system.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“The decision by the Department of Education to refer the report into the procurement practices of the Kildare/Wicklow Education and Training Board (KWETB) to an Garda Síochána is both welcome and shocking at the same time.
“It is to be welcomed because of the issues involved, and shocking that such a situation was allowed to develop in the first place.
“Dr Thorn found no contemporaneous evidence that a tender took place.
“How was this possible?
“Issues of non-compliance with national procurement guidelines is something that is happening across the entirety of the public service
“We know this because it keeps on cropping up every week in the PAC.
“The Department of Education has serious questions to answer in terms of its own oversight and enforcement practices.
“I will be putting these questions to the Department when they are next in front of the PAC.”
