Groundhog Day for hospital waiting lists - Louise O'Reilly TD
Speaking this morning Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD has said that the increase in the number of patients waiting on medical treatment in the State is proof that this government’s plan is not working, and has never worked.
Teachta O’Reilly said:
“There are two certainties when it comes to the release of national hospital waiting list figures; one is that they’ll be released late in the evening towards the end of the week, and the second is that they will have undoubtedly increased.
“Like clockwork, that is what happened yesterday evening when the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) released the hospital waiting list figures for August which showed that hospital waiting lists increased to a record 718,165 patients.
“There has hardly been a month since this government came to office where the total number of people on waiting lists has decreased.
“When the current Taoiseach came to office he would be taking a special interest in health – this special interest has amounted to overseeing 718,000 people on hospital waiting lists.
“The situation is out of control and the Minister for Health and the government just continue to follow flawed and failed plans.
“We need to see sustained and intelligent investment in the public health system to tackle waiting lists. This needs to be done through the full implementation of the Sláintecare report.
“While this may be costly in the short term, it will have significant financial and health benefits for the State and for patients in the long term."
