'Latest Paisley scandal piles pressure on DUP’ - McShane
The DUP Leadership continues to fail to address the ever-increasing number of scandals associated with its disgraced North Antrim MP Ian Paisley, Causeway Coast and Glens Sinn Féin Councillor Cara McShane has said.
Cllr McShane was speaking after it emerged that Causeway Coast and Glens Council had paid £1,500 for a table at DUP fundraising dinner hosted by Ian Paisley last September. It was previously revealed that the Electoral Commission is investigating Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s decision to sponsor a table at the same event.
“As elected representatives, we were not made aware of, or were asked to consent to this decision so for council officials to decide to spend ratepayers money attending a DUP fundraiser is disgraceful,” Cllr. McShane said.
“It is also a clear a breach of electoral rules for local authorities to make political donations and the Electoral Commission is already investigating Mid and East Antrim Council for what it has described as a donation to Ian Paisley.
“I have already raised this with council officials and the response has not been satisfactory so it is clear that there should now be a similar investigation of the actions of Causeway Coast and Glens officials by the Commission.
“I also have to ask what will it take for the DUP leadership to come out and comment on the actions of Ian Paisley.
“He is currently subject to a recall petition which closes on Wednesday and despite all the time it has been open, they have not clarified where they stand on the various scandals associated with him.
“How many scandals and controversies must he be involved in before the DUP Leadership take any action?”
