EU refugee policy must be based on humanitarian concerns - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson humanitarian concerns must be at the centre of EU policies dealing with refugees.
Speaking from Malta, Martina Anderson said:
"I am leading the European Parliament's LIBE committee fact-finding mission to Malta to meet with representatives of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO).
"I will be visiting reception centres and seeing what conditions are like for those who come to Europe seeking asylum, including those fleeing conflict and persecution.
"During the course of the visit I will also meet with others who are involved with helping refugees, such as Sea-Watch, who carry out civil search and rescue operations in the central Mediterranean.
"The way the EU has handled the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean has been shameful. The EU must reform how countries are designated as 'safe' in order to prevent sending men, women and children back to face further persecution and danger.
"I will be making it clear to the EASO officials and all those involved with asylum seekers and refugees that all policies must be based on humanitarian concerns.
"Those rescued from the sea or who make it ashore seeking a new life are not merely statistics; they are human beings and should be treated as such."
