Anderson urges Taoiseach to allocate European seats to North
Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson has said today’s report from the Constituency Commission is a missed opportunity to stand up for democracy and called on the Irish government to allocate its two additional European Parliament seats to the North.
Martina Anderson said:
“The recommendation from the Constituency Commission represents a missed opportunity to uphold democracy for all Irish citizens.
“Sinn Féin had made a submission calling for the two additional European Parliament seats to be allocated to the north so that people would not be disenfranchised as a result of Brexit.
“The Irish government can of course still choose to allocate these seats to the North and I would call on it to do so in line with the Taoiseach’s commitment that irish citizens in the North will never again be left behind by an Irish government.
“There is support for such a move as was shown today when Donegal County Council passed a motion calling for the seats to be allocated to the north with the support of councillors from Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil.
“I am calling on the Taoiseach to reflect on this and his previous commitments, as well as independent legal advice, and allocate these seats to the north.”
