Civil Liability Bill an attack on workers' rights - Kearney
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Workers Rights Declan Kearney MLA, has criticised the Tory-DUP Government’s Civil Liability Bill. This Bill proposes to double the Small Claims Limit for victims of workplace accidents.
At present workers can recover legal costs for cases valued at £1,000 and above. However if the proposed Bill is passed into law workers could not recover legal costs unless these reach or exceed £2,000.
The South Antrim MLA said:
“If passed this legislation will be devastating for injured workers and their access to justice. This Bill is designed to deter injured workers from taking cases against employers when they have reason to do so.
"The Bill represents a Tory stealth attack on workers' rights and protections.
"The DUP should publicly declare whether it intends to support this Bill and the adverse consequences it will have for people injured in workplace accidents."
