Gildernew calls for protection of GP services
Sinn Féin MLA for Fermanagh South-Tyrone, Colm Gildernew has said General Practice services in the Dungannon area must be protected.
The party’s carers spokesperson said:
"GP services are often the first point of contact for people accessing health services.
"GP practices not only deliver primary care but they also play a vital role in promoting health and wellbeing, supporting people to manage long term conditions and keeping them well for longer.
"This is particularly the case for rural towns and villages.
"I wrote to the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Health in relation to challenges facing GP services following a number of recent retirements and I will continue to press the Department on the need to protect primary care services in Dungannon and across the constituency.
"GP services, like health and social care services generally, are under pressure and face workforce challenges with almost a quarter of GPs in the north over 55 years of age.
"As Minister, Michelle O'Neill recognised the need for more GPs moving forward and increased the number of GP training places.
"The Department of Health need to continue efforts to retain and attract people into general practice to ensure these vital services are delivered to the community."
