‘Hernia mesh treatment should be halted’ - Flynn

28 September, 2018 - by Órlaithí Flynn

Sinn Fein MLA Orlaithi Flynn has called for a halt in the widespread use of mesh implants for the treatment of hernias following growing concerns about serious life changing complications reported by patients.

The West Belfast MLA commented:

“It has taken years of campaigning to highlight the damage inflicted on many women by the use of vaginal mesh implants. Now similar reports are emerging as a result of the use of mesh in hernia operations for both women and men.

“Recently Sinn Féin met with a group of people, mostly men, experiencing persistent severe pain and difficulty walking following mesh implants for hernias. It was heart breaking to witness the pain most of those who came to speak to us experienced during that visit.

“The voices of those damaged by mesh must be heard and immediate action taken to ensure no more people suffer as a result of the use of this discredited product.”
