'Austerity and Brexit are the biggest threats to the North' - Hazzard
Tory austerity and Brexit are the two biggest threats to the economy of the north, Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard said today.
Commenting after British Chancellor Philip Hammond’s speech at the Conservative Party Conference warning of further Tory austerity cuts, the South Down MP said:
“The Tories have been cutting budgets year on year since 2010 taking more than £1 billion out of front-line public services here.
“Today's announcement from the British Chancellor Philip Hammond is more evidence of their complete disregard for our economy, our public services and the majority of people in the north.
“Tory cuts to public services and their disastrous Brexit are the two biggest threats to the economy of the north, for business, for farmers and the wider agri-food industry, for the health service, for workers’ rights, border communities and our peace process.
“These cuts and the damage to our public services can be stopped but they are being facilitated by the DUP propping up the British Government.
“The DUP’s support for these policies is against the interests and wishes of the majority of people in the North.
“Tory cuts and a reckless Brexit have become the price of the union and the toxic Tory-DUP pact.”
