Adams welcome for Economic Task Force results
West Belfast MP Gerry Adams today welcomed the inaugural report of the Employment Services Board for the Economic Task Force areas of West Belfast and Greater Shankill.
Speaking at the launch Mr Adams said:
" I would like to commend those involved in this important work and in the Job Assist Centres. As we have learned, one of the results of this is that 1000 people who were economically inactive in the whole of West Belfast, including the Shankill, are now actively engaged and on the path to employment.
" With early results like this, it is essential that the Job Assist Centres and the Transitional Employment Programmes are extended beyond 2006."
The West Belfast MP said that he would be raising the question of British government support for the programmes with the Direct Rule Minister Angela Smith:
" Sustained mainstream support is required, and I expect those in the Department of Employment and Learning who have given commitments to these programmes and have seen for themselves the early successes, to now make the case for long term mainstream funding. I will certainly be making representations and look for other politicians to join us in this." ENDS
