Disastrous Fine Gael housing policy must change – Denise Mitchell TD

3 October, 2018 - by Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs Denise Mitchell TD has said the Government must declare a housing emergency and increase investment in social and affordable housing to tackle homelessness.

Speaking in the Dáil as thousands protested outside as part of the ‘Raise the Roof’ campaign, Deputy Mitchell said:

“Today, in this state, we have record numbers of children homeless.

“We have record numbers of people in emergency accommodation and we have record numbers on housing waiting lists.

“In the last three years, this Government has delivered precisely zero affordable homes.”

The Dublin Bay North TD said the Government needed a change of strategy:

“A new approach is needed to allow young people, people on modest incomes and single people to be able to afford their own homes.

“This motion makes reference to older people, and I think that it absolutely shocking that we are seeing so many of our senior citizens – people who have worked hard all their lives – becoming homeless, due in large part to spiralling rents.

“The proper response to this crisis is to build more homes, protect renters, and return vacant houses to use.”
