Fearon welcomes launch of "No Grey Zone” campaign

4 October, 2018 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has welcomed the launch of a new campaign to educate young people about sexual consent.

The party’s equality spokesperson said:

“I welcome the launch of the "No Grey Zone” campaign by the PSNI and other agencies.

“This campaign will help raise awareness on the type of behaviour that will be treated as sexual assault unless consent has been granted and also helps explain what constitutes both verbal and non-verbal consent.

“3,528 reports of sexual offences between September 2017 and August 2018 were recorded by the PSNI, compared to 3,229 during the previous 12 months, however many sexual assaults go unreported.

“Sinn Féin believe that an inclusive, diverse and welfare-based Relationships and Sexuality Education programme which is appropriate to their age and comprehension should be accessible to all young people.

“The curriculum should contain aspects that cater for LGBT+ students, students with disabilities, modules on consent and all contraceptive options and promote positive sexual health.

“This should be formalised with sufficient teaching hours, teacher training and support, set hours and updated curriculum handbooks.

“All victims of sexual assault or violence should receive the necessary support from adequate services and that they feel confident that they will be listened to and respected if they report it to the police and that their report will be thoroughly investigated.”
