Sinn Féin meet Chief Equality Commissioner

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams and the party's spokesperson on Equality and Human Rights Caitriona Ruane MLA today met with the Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission Bob Collins in Belfast.

Speaking after the meeting Ms Ruane said:

" Equality and Human Rights are at the core of our political agenda. We have high expectations on the Equality Commission to deliver.

" Today was a useful first meeting with the new Chief Commissioner. We raised a number of issues with him which we want to see prioritised in the coming period.

" These included:

The need to ensure that public bodies are held accountable for implementing equality measures.Further efforts required to tackle discrimination and under representation amongst Catholics in the workforce.Travellers, woman's' and ethnic minority rights being promoted and addressed.

" We welcome the Chief Commissioner's intention to engage more with political parties and civic society in a bid to advance the equality agenda in the time ahead." ENDS
