Clear show of unity against Brexit - O'Neill
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Michelle O'Neill MLA has said that today’s meeting of Sinn Féin, SDLP, Alliance and Green Party with EU Chief negotiator Michel Barnier signified a clear show of unity by the pro remain Assembly parties speaking as one voice on behalf of the majority of citizens in the North opposed to Brexit.
Michelle O'Neill said:
“Today the parties stood together in the heart of the EU to make it absolutely clear that the DUP and British Government do not represent the cross-community majority of people of the North who voted against Brexit, and who do not want us to be excluded from the Customs Union or Single Market which only serves to increase business costs, and hamper trade, jobs and economic opportunity.
“Mr Barnier and others who we met today, including the European Parliament’s most senior representative on Brexit, Guy Verhofstadt all share our determination to defend the Good Friday Agreement and avoid any hard border on the island of Ireland.
“We asserted our common position that the ‘backstop’ as already agreed must be maintained and is the absolute bottom line for Sinn Féin, SDLP, Alliance and Green Party as we enter the endgame of the Brexit negotiation process on Britain’s Withdrawal Agreement with the EU27.”
