‘DUP reach bizarre new Brexit low’ - Ó Muilleoir
The DUP’s Brexit agenda has reached a bizarre new low with the party’s MEP Diane Dodds today seemingly ruling out any checks on lasagne, Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has said.
The Sinn Féin Brexit spokesperson was commenting from New York where he has been addressing a Carnegie conference after Diane Dodds told reporters in Brussels that the DUP could not accept post-Brexit checks on the Italian favourite.
Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said:
“Never mind the catastrophic impact on our economy and communities across Ireland, none of that matters to the DUP if there’s going to be checks on lasagne crossing the Irish Sea.
“If that is the best argument the DUP can come up with for undermining our economy, our peace process and imposing a new border on the island of Ireland, then they really are out of step with the vast majority of people on this island and across Europe.
“The EU rightly views the Irish peace process as its crowning achievement and has always stood ready to promote reconciliation and prosperity in the North.
“How bewildered they must feel today at the sight of a delegation from the North asking them to stand aside and allow the Brexit juggernaut crush our economy.”
